Description
Xerox PARC. External view of Silicon Valley's Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), one of the most innovative computer science centres in the USA. PARC became famous in the 1970s as birthplace of the laser printer, the computer workstation, the mouse and the graphical user interface" - the now-universal computer interface based on windows and icons. The centre is currently developing the concept of ubiquitous computing - computers built almost invisibly into everyday items that communicate with the user and with each other. Although famous for "inventing the future", PARC's most successful inventions were not patented and have been commercially exploited by rivals."
