Semiconductor wafer. Image of a circular semiconductor wafer. The band of light illuminates some of the blocks of integrated circuits (IC) known as 'chips' on the silicon wafer. The ICs are formed on the thin silicon wafer by various deposition and etching techniques. When the time comes for the ICs to be used, the wafer is chopped up into individual chips which are then used in electronic devices.
