Description
Head of fruit fly. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a side view of the head of the fruit fly, Drosophila funebris. At top, a multi- faceted compound eye is seen; between the eyes are antennae consisting of small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. On the snout is a proboscis designed like a suction tube; palps occur on either side of the proboscis. Hairs or setae cover the fly's head, and may be used for touch. Drosophila funebris, like its more famous relative D.melanogaster, is also used for genetic experiments and it contains giant chromosomes in its salivary glands. Magnification: x45 at 6x4.5cm size.
