Description
False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The specimen is of the wild type, known as Oregon R. D. melanogaster has for many years been the subject of genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it was easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. The waist between the head & thorax is characteristic of flies, allowing some mobility. The head carries the large multifaceted compound eyes. The antennae are reduced to small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. Bristles, or setae, cover the body. Magnification: x9 at 35mm size, x18 at 6x4.5cm size.
