This image is of the register section of an Intel 4004 microprocessor. The golden bars across this chip are traces. Aluminum wiring, or traces, were used at the upper most layer of the chip to connect the transistors that were etched in the lower layers (the blue areas). The traces are about 10 microns wide. That's about one fifth as wide as a human hair. You can imagine how dust and hair would be bad for making chips.
